Project facts:
Duration: 2008 – 2010 (Phase lll) Current Phase Budget: CHF 681’788 SDC Contribution: CHF 170’000 Location: Republic of Tajikistan Partner: Local authorities and rural communities Implementing Agency: CAMP Kuhiston, CARITAS CH, UNDP, Oxfam GB Donor: SDC Humanitarian Aid Department, CARITAS Switzerland, UNDP, Oxfam GB
Background
Central Asia and especially its mountainous areas are prone to natural disasters which frequently affect the economy and the population of Central Asian countries, killing people, damaging livelihood and hampering sustainable development. Local communities lack both technical knowledge and the necessary skills to manage disastrous events.
Awareness is the base for any measure to be taken to reduce the communities’ risk posed by natural disasters. The increase of awareness thus allows strengthening the understanding of integrated risk management and prepares the floor on a local level to get active in disaster reduction.
Overall goal
The project overall aim is to ensure that local risk management capacity focused at the local level in rural areas of Tajikistan is built and strengthened.
Project objectives
· Increasing awareness and capacity of the local communities and authorities to manage disaster risks at local level
· Reducing disaster risk in selected communities through (small scale) mitigation measures
· Enhancing efficient collaboration on ILRM between local authorities, communities and other relevant actors
Project implementation
The project will be implemented jointly with three collaborating partners (Caritas, Oxfam and UNDP DRMP), which are in the same time co-donors to this joint initiative. Respective national and international stakeholders in DRR field such as IMAC and Focus Humanitarian Assistance, as well as the local authorities, will be involved in the project implementation. The workshops will be carried out in various villages according to the priorities and expectations of the respective donors. This will involve the local communities and authorities at three different levels: Khukumat, Jamoat and Mahalla Councils. While CAMP Kuhiston will mainly focus on awareness building and capacity strengthening, the co-funding partners will follow-up with the implementation of small-scale mitigation measures.
