Visas
Citizens of Switzerland and of selected countries from the list of simplified procedures defined by the Government of Tajikistan (at the moment over 85) obtain the Tajik entry visa either as per simplified rules (up to 45 days, single entry/exit) at the Consular Bureau upon arrival at Dushanbe airport (just fill in 2 copies of the application form - which can also be downloaded from http://www.mfa.tj – and attach 2 colour passport-size photos) or through the Tajik Embassy in Vienna, Austria. Please also consult the official website of the Tajik Embassy in <>Vienna: http://www.tajikembassy.org<>
Long term multiple visas are issued by MFA TJ in Dushanbe only. Visa processing takes one month.
If in Tajikistan you wish to travel to Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) you need to obtain a special permit in addition to Tajik visa. The GBAO permit can be issued by Tajik Embassy in Vienna along with the visa. Detailed info can be downloaded from http://www.mfa.tj/. In Tajikistan the GBAO-permit is issued by OVIR (see below). For assistance you may get the service from a local travel agency (please check the internet). In addition, special permit needs to be obtained for visits to big water reservoirs like Lake Sarez, and natural reserve Tigrovaya Balka. Please also consult with a local travel agency.

Visas
In general you should arrange your visa before arriving to Kyrgyzstan. Holders of Swiss diplomatic passports do not need a visa. Swiss citizens (and citizens of 27 other countries) arriving through Manas airport in Bishkek can apply for a Kyrgyz visa upon arrival.
Registration Requirements with OVIR (Visa Registration Department)
Swiss citizens (and citizens of 27 other countries), who are leaving the country within the validity period of their visa, but within no more than 60 days (usually tourists), do not have to register with the Passport Visa Services Unit of the Ministry of Interior (OVIR)
All foreigners intending to stay in Kyrgyzstan beyond the validity of their visa, respectively longer then 60 days, even if the visa would have a validity of more than 60 days (usually foreigner working in private business or cooperation projects/organizations), have to register in the district of residence at the Passport Visa Services Unit of the Ministry of Interior (OVIR) within 5 days of arrival in country. (Who has an accreditation does not need to be registered).
Usually registration with the OVIR is done through your local organisation, so please contact them to organise it. If you are not part of a local organisation (if you are with a private business or a smaller NGO etc) then you will need to register by yourself. It means you need to go to the nearest OVIR and give them your passport and address in Kyrgyzstan and receive a stamp in your passport. (You can be also registered at any Passport Desk Office of the district you are living in Kyrgyzstan, or at the hotel you stay). Failure to register will result in fines and delays in departing from Kyrgyzstan.
Additional Information:
1. Liability to register equally applies to all family members.
2. The cost of registration by law should be just over 100 som (1USD is about 36 som) , however, the cost may vary from city to city.
3. Students will be registered for up to one year of study pending subsequent renewals. Failure to register will result in fines and delays in departing from Kyrgyzstan. At this date, fines and registration can only be paid at district Passport and Visa Services Offices – not at Bishkek International Airport or any land border crossings. If you have not already registered and are required to do so, please register immediately as to avoid any difficulties when you next depart from Kyrgyzstan.
OVIR contacts:
In Bishkek 64 Toktogula Str., crossing Pravda Str. Tel.+996 (312) 28-59-36
(If you are a tourist and traveling around the country and want to stay beyond the validity of your visa, respectively for longer than 60 days, you may get the visa extension or if need be registration at the OVIR offices in the main province cities: Osh, Jalalabad, Talas, Naryn, Cholpon-Ata, Karakol).
Security instructions
In general, the Kyrgyz Republic is a safe country. However, the recent months saw an increase in aggression for theft incidences necessitating hospital treatment of the victims. Vulnerability to most security risks can be kept low by sticking to a number of simple rules.
- Precautions against pick-pockets, con-men, harassment, mugging, robbery and physical assault are very much the same as those which have to be applied in any larger Western European city. It is strictly advised not to walk around Bishkek after dusk.
-
Please carry a photocopy of your passport and visa with you at all times. Police does not have a right to check your bags or pockets. In case of any incidents with the authorities contact the Swiss Cooperation Office immediately.

-
Watch your step. Some of the canalization covers remain open.
-
By far the most serious security risk are the traffic accidents due to the bad maintenance of cars and roads. Local drivers hardly ever follow the traffic rules and they have no respect for other drivers and pedestrians. Wear security belts at all times, sit in the back when taking taxis. Try to avoid driving by yourself, hire a professional driver whenever possible. Night driving outside Bishkek is to be avoided as much as possible.
-
As a pedestrian, be very careful and remember that local drivers usually do not stop at zebra crossings neither they let pedestrians pass.
-
Do not take a taxi where there are already other passengers, don’t’ allow other passengers you don’t know to join you.
-
Especially since the tulip revolution in March 2005, a culture of public protests, pickets and demonstrations has taken root. Avoid crowds and demonstrations as there is a possibility that they turn violent.
-
When traveling to the south (Batken, Osh, Jalalabat region) be aware that this is a zone with a potential for tensions that may flare up.
-
Do not take photographs of military objects, policemen, border guards, strategic buildings to avoid conflict with the authorities.
-
Always let someone know when and where you are going and when you expect to be back. Try not to travel alone.
