Skills for life in Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya Refugee protection and integration has been a central objective of the SDC Humanitarian Aid for many years in the region. In the new regional Whole of Government strategy for the Horn of Africa within the pillar migration and protection this objective remains important. The project in Kakuma camp will develop skills that are of utmost benefit within the camp, to the youth of the host communities but also in the refugees’ country of origin, keeping in mind a possible future return. more

Habibo a true living example By Abdiweli Hussein Elmi, Adeso Field Assistant-Luuq: Adeso (African devlopement solutions), funded by SDC, started the second phase of the Cash Assistance to Vulnerable Households in South Central Somalia project in October 2012. The objective of the project is to provide immediate assistance to vulnerable households through unconditional cash grants to allow them to meet their basic needs, including food and access to essential non-food items. The Emergency Response Fund and Resilience Building in Southeast Kenya
The Horn of Africa is prone to natural shocks. 2011 has seen the worst drought in 60 years. Over 13 million people in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Uganda have been severely affected and needed humanitarian assistance. As of March 2012, the humanitarian community still has to target 9 million people in the region. The Emergency Response Fund (ERF) in Kenya is a rapid and flexible mechanism to respond to humanitarian needs and enable the coordination of emergency response activities. Testimonial: Camel Distribution as Adaptation to the Changing Climate
Yussuf Dika (48) is a member of the Borana tribe and lives in Bilikit, a village in the North-East of Kenya. As a beneficiary of a restocking program, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, Suisse (VSF-Suisse) provided him with five goats, a camel and a course in camel management. Camels and goats are much better adapted to the arid zones of Kenya than cows, which used to be the preferred animals of most Borana herders. The VSF project is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. It is a response to climate change and provides herders, who lost their animals to drought, with a new start and a better outlook for the future. more
SDC Support Saves Children’s Lives in Kenya’s Northeast
In 2010 - 2011 the Horn of Africa suffered from the worst drought since sixty years. Main victims of the humanitarian disaster were women and children. SDC helps them directly with food and by supporting a project aimed at changing destructive feeding practices. more
