Skills for life in Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya
Refugee protection and integration has been a central objective of the SDC Humanitarian Aid for many years in the region. In the new regional Whole of Government strategy for the Horn of Africa within the pillar migration and protection this objective remains important.  The Emergency Response Fund and Resilience Building in Southeast Kenya
Kitui_Chicken_Beneficiaries_02.JPGThe Horn of Africa is prone to natural shocks. 2011 has seen the worst drought in 60 years. Over 13 million people in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Uganda have been severely affected and needed humanitarian assistance. As of March 2012, the humanitarian community still has to target 9 million people in the region. The Emergency Response Fund (ERF) in Kenya is a rapid and flexible mechanism to respond to humanitarian needs and enable the coordination of emergency response activities. Read more about the ERF and a project example

Testimonial: Camel Distribution as Adaptation to the Changing Climate
Merti_Camel_Head_with_Man_01_1.JPGYussuf Dika (48) is a member of the Borana tribe and lives in Bilikit, a village in the North-East of Kenya. As a beneficiary of a restocking program, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, Suisse (VSF-Suisse) provided him with five goats, a camel and a course in camel management. Camels and goats are much better adapted to the arid zones of Kenya than cows, which used to be the preferred animals of most Borana herders. The VSF project is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. It is a response to climate change and provides herders, who lost their animals to drought, with a new start and a better outlook for the future. more
