Active participation by citizens in the political life of their countries, the principles of separation of powers, as much as strong democratic institutions, both central and local, are prerequisites for a well functioning democratic system. Through the domain Rule of Law and Democracy the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) continues to support the democratic institutions in Macedonia, to gain legitimacy and to achieve national objectives on integration and internal stability.

The activities in this domain are grouped in three sub-domains: Facilitating Decentralisation, Strengthening Civil Society and Mainstreaming Democratic Lawmaking.
