Economic reform for poverty reduction

The Private Sector in Mozambique remains still in its infancy. Particularly in rural areas substance farming still dominates. With the gradual improvement of basic infrastructure (roads, electricity, telecommunication, etc.) as well as Mozambique’s integration into the global market, more and more economic activities are emerging in different parts of the country.

Switzerland intends to reinforce this process by exploring specific niches with high demand and relevant value added, in particular on investment and trade promotion, as well as reinforcing the dynamics of the rural and local economy as an important engine for a broad based growth.

The focus of the interventions will be on

  • access to external markets, in particular for agricultural and agro-processed products, through strengthened quality assurance capacities so as to be compliant with international standards
  • addressing the value chain for export-led SMEs development and employment creation
  • mainstreaming the trade policy agenda into national growth and development policies and
  • facilitating investments.
