The Highway Africa News Agency (HANA) is a project of the Rhodes University School of Journalism. HANA is an innovative virtual news agency aimed at training journalists from the continent to report the unfolding story of Information and Communication Technologies and their role in development to African audiences.
The HANA project grew out of the Highway Africa Conference; an annual gathering convened over the last seven years by the <>Rhodes University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies in partnership with the South African Broadcasting Cooperation. The conference brings together journalists from all over Africa to be trained on covering the use of and access to communication technologies by African societies. HANA seeks to bring African media into the centre of debates about the Global Information Society, an area not adequately covered by the media. It will also partner with community media to inspire and spread the story of technologies and their potential to communities.
HANA will cover stories on information and communication technologies and general information society issues in Africa. HANA will therefore: -
- Train and mentor journalist to report on information and communication technology issues to African audiences
- Disseminate information to governments, civil society and the media across Africa on the use of communication and information technology for development and eradicating poverty.
- Strengthen the capacity of African media to report on ICTs
- Create a platform for agenda setting, discussion on the role of ICTs in poverty reduction
HANA is a project of the Rhodes University School of Journalism and is located within the School of Journalism. Partners include, the South African Broadcasting Association (SABC), the Netherlands Institute for Southern Africa and the Association of Community Radio to extend the reach of its news.
