Swiss Humanitarian Assistance to Georgia started in the early 1990s as a result of the civil wars following the country’s independence. Since 1998, Switzerland has also been engaged in Technical Cooperation.

Bilateral cooperation between Georgia and Switzerland is based on the Agreement between the Government of the Swiss Confederation and the Government of Georgia concerning Technical, Financial and Humanitarian Cooperation signed in January 2005.

Swiss project assistance to Georgia is provided in the fields of Economic Development and Employment, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Recovery and Reconstruction.

Activities in the domain of Economic Development and Employment focus on rural market and value chain development and apply the so-called making markets work for the poor approach (M4P). Information on this approach is provided in the M4P Synthesis Paper or on the websites of the Springfield Centre for Business in Development or the M4P Network.

Swiss-funded rural development projects integrate and address main principles of Disaster Risk Reduction, as outlined in SDC’s DRR Guidelines.

In cooperation with the United Nations DRR Advisor in Georgia, SDC has drafted a Directory on "Who Does What Where in Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia” on disaster management capacities in Georgia.

The following core projects are currently implemented in Georgia (detail information on these projects will be available in September 2009):

  • Rural development in Samtskhe-Javakheti
  • Rural development in Racha-Lechkhumi
  • Rural Tourism and Development
  • Social Housing in a Supportive Environment in TbilisiKutaisi, Gori, Zugdidi and Batumi
  • Disaster Risk Reduction in the municipalities of Tsageri and Lentekhi
