latest update: September 2009
SDC supports several projects in the health domain in Tajikistan. Although separately administered, the projects complement each other by coherently assisting the Ministry of Health in the implementation of the health sector reform.
Launched in 2003, the Health Care Reform and Family Medicine Support Project helps the Ministry of Health to develop, test and implement a new primary health care model in four pilot districts – Varzob, Dangara, Tursunzade and Shahrinaw.
Together with a number of other donors, SDC is supporting preparatory works for the introduction of a Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) in the Tajik Health Sector. For coordination work and technical assistance, SDC has allocated so far around 450’000 US Dollars.
Undergraduate medical education at the Tajik State Medical University is undergoing reforms. SDC supports this process by providing technical and financial assistance to a working group that has been established to elaborate a detailed reform concept.
Students at the Tajik State Medical University face a drastic shortage of books, making it difficult to learn and prepare for exams. As a contribution to the Library of the Tajik Medical University SDC provided funds for the purchase of over 5000 new basic educational books, thereby making a small but important contribution to higher quality in medical education.
The Community and Basic Health Project co-funded by Worldbank, SIDA and SDC covers a wide range of health topics from Primary Health Care to Health Sector Coordination. Participation in this project will allow SDC to both gain experiences for its other ongoing health projects and to disseminate knowledge gained there in.
In total Swiss contribution to the health sector in Tajikistan currently amounts to more than six million US dollars.
